Halifax Bank Collections issue

Hi all,
just posting on here to query some disagreements I am currently having with Halifax bank collections office.
To cut a story short, I had an overdraft on the account and switched banks. I didnt pay the overdraft off at the time because I didnt have enough money so I set up a payment plan.
To pay the agreed amount of £100 a month I had to phone up there number to make a payment. On request they gave me some information to set up a standing order, when I tried to do this the standing order would not set-up (trying online with lloyds online banking) so I continued phoning up to make the payments.
When my payment due for 28/7/14 came up I made the call and made the payment and explained that I wouldnt be able to make the payment the following month, till the 30th due to me being on holiday till that date. She explained that there was no problem with this and she would leave a note on my file extending the dates so my payment could be processed.
Anyway thats when my troubles started. As expected my payments left my bank account on the 31st of July, on the first of august i received a payment into my account of £100 which states 555 card payment.
Anyway believing I had made this payment I enjoyed my holiday, and when I came back I rang the collections office to make a payment. They notified me this was not possible as they werent in charge of my account anymore and that I should wait for a letter or phone call with further information.
Today a week later I phoned again asking for information on how to make the payment, they put me through to the other department who then stated the collections team should still be looking after my account, so then I got put back through to collections who said I needed to set-up a new payment plan.
At this stage I was annoyed due to the messing about I had done. Then I had an email from Noddle that my new credit report was ready, so I checked and it said I had 2 late payments from the july and august collections.
I made a formal complaint and they stated I had broken the agreement twice. And there was nothing they could do.
I explained the situation. But still they were adament I was in the wrong. My payment went out of my bank, on the 30th July and now I beleive the 555 card payment was in fact them returning the payment.
On what grounds can I make an appeal to this, because I made this payment and it was them that returned the payment to my account.
Every time I paid over the phone they explained the payment process and I asked if it would affect my credit rating with the payment possibly taking time to clear and they said no.
Yet when I was explaining this to the complaints department, all he said was im sorry you was given miss information.
Could anybody give me there advice on this situation
