My daughter bought this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Generic-Hard-Disk-Drive-250GB/dp/B000OUI8PU/ref=sr_1_3/203-1488398-6883933?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1183842758&sr=8-3

and this http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=97124&C=Maplin&U=SearchTop&T=MEDIA%20ENCLOSURE&doy=7m7

The HD came with nothing, and the media centre came with a driver cd and your usual wires.

Now, the drivers are installed (from the cd that came with the media centre), the HD is in the media centre, it's all hooked up by usb to the computer, and the media centre is switched on, but when I try to install the media centre with the HD in it ends up with "the device cannot start"...I've tried both of my 2 usb ports and the same thing comes up. I've looked on the site that seems to be behind the making of the External HD ( http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/ ) but it's full of computer jargon that I don't understand, plus I cannot tell which of their products is what I have other than it's one of the two 250GB ones on their site.

The computer also says that the usb ports will cause the device to run at reduced speed in a seperate error popup.

Does anyone know why this could be?

P.S. My OS is Windows XP.

many thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have USB 1 ports on your computer which is going to be a real issue because you do need USB 2 on these.

HDDs don't need to come with anything because there are no drivers needed and the OS/OS installation CD takes care of partitioning.

Don't understand what you mean when you say you've tried to install the Media Centre.

All that "should" happen is that you turn on Windows, plug the USB lead in from the external drive enclosure (with the HDD installed) and XP should pick it up and run the Add New Hardware wizard.

It's something that's going to need somebody physically there to take a look at it.
