better of working or on benefits?

You have not started your job yet, but already you are planning for when you are sick. Accidents happen and we all sometimes get ill, but to plan for it is taking the !!!! somewhat.
It is time for you to manage your affairs responsibly without the safety net of benefits to back you up with every decision you have to make in life.
What will you do when you cannot claim benefits, will you have learned to stand on your own two feet, or expect others to dig you out of the mess you make of your life.
You are a father, it is your job to show those kids how to live responsibly, showing that working hard brings rewards, not putting out your hand and expecting other people to pay up.

With all due respect Heffi1, when I worked previously I didn't take ONE day off sick in over 3 years of work, so I am definitely not one to take time of sick. Regarding not relying on the safety net of benefits, unfortunately in London on that wage, you can not survive without that safety net of benefits. I think it would be irresponsible as a Dad NOT to plan on the worst case scenario of having a day or two of work sick in the future.0 -
ok then now is the time to be saving an emergency fund so you will not suffer too much if you are sick in the future.

Saving is easier said then done, but if I have extra money, I will always try and save a bit. BTW, my original question was regarding a day or two sick of work, not a prolonged period of time.0 -
I realise it is not easy to save, but it should be a priority, even if it is to replace a freezer that breaks not necessarily for sick purposes.
I don't think any of us think we will be sick, sometimes it catches us by surprise, but we do need to think of what will happen if it does. I have gone to work before when I was not really well enough as losing a days pay is not nice. If I am really sick then I will see the Dr and get signed off, I have to produce a sick/fit note each time I am away from work and that in itself is a pain the rear end, so I usually try to get in if I can.

You don't get anything for the first 3 days of sick with statutory sick pay. (SSP)Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

You've worked for 3 years?
To answer this part of your moral query you take out insurance to cover illness and loss of employment.
I can't comment on your moral enquiry as I'm at a loss for words not necessarily because of you but the situation and the fact that people can have up to 8 children with no thought as to how to pay for them whilst I work my bottom off to pay taxes to support them.
The system is a complete mess when people need to think twice to take a job nearly double NMW.Tomorrow is the most important thing in life0 -
Okay, so I called up housing benefit to notify them that I am starting work tomorrow, and they have said that my HB will be suspended from today and will be re-assessed when I send them my employment contract. I assume this will now take a week. Is this normal? and why have they suspended the payment from today and not form tomorrow when my employment begins? Also, will the new HB payments be backdated to the day I start work, (tomorrow) or am I going to lose a week of payments?
I don't know why they make it so difficult and confusing. It's almost as if they want to make it more difficult for people who are getting back into work.0 -
because today is the last day that you are unemployed.
it may take a while to sort out ( depending on how quickly you give them the information they need) but any award will run on from your current award without any gaps
