Apparently this is not the first time... the kids now tell me!
I am using XP.
I load a rewritable cd into the dvd / cd writer and the computer shuts down.... re starts and then Norton sticks up a flag saying 2x faults. System scan not done since a month ago and virus update out of date????
Both have been updated but i think they where already. Tried it again and exactly the same thing happend!
I restored to a date a week ago and all was fine... untill i stick the rw /cd in again. back to square 1.
I have reset to a few months back now as the kids said it first did it a "few weeks back" and they have not written anything to disc since. But still no joy.
Can anyone offer any advice to a computer user but not fully understander please.
Thanks for looking.

Go through the malware removal guide sticky on this board."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

First problem.......
I need to back up but usually do this to the cd drive.
I dont have the xp discs as it came already loaded on the machine.
My docs has loads of photo's on it and stands at 20 GB on its own at mo.
Thought of using using PC linq but this may obvilously transfer any bug to my laptop.
Next was the thought of online back up services... lost at the choice... any recommendations please?
Forgive my low tech expertise on this....... I have failed to keep up with the advances made on PC's. Wake up call this... at least I have not lost anything... yet!I save so I can spend.0 -
Try copying to laptop first (should be fine as you aren't installing anything) you can always scan the laptop with same methods afterwards to make sure it's clean. 20 GiB is a lot to transfer online and will take an awful long time but if you really want to I personally use Mozy's unlimited service.
As for XP, what pc is it? Some have an installation/restore partition, and/or you could ask pc seller for backup disc and/or get a friend's copy (must be same version, presumably XP Home OEM) and make sure you have your serial number (usually sticker on pc, or use http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml)."She is quite the oddball. Its a Time machine..... not a Tardis you understand! Since they have gone bust not much hope there I would assume.
My laptop belongs to the company i work for so not sure transfering the data across if it might be infected is the best idea??
Can i zip the picture files up and transfer??
Yes as you may be know realising ....... I'm not too hot on the old PC front.
And if not Norton... what do you recommend.I save so I can spend.0 -
