  • That said, I understand that you can only upgrade one class and I wonder if the 'upgrade' was from WT+ to club world.

It could well have been PE to CW, didnt do the booking myself, just paid the bill and was very pleased at effectively paying £600 PP for a return ticket in CW.

And from Y to J wouldn't have been "a couple quid more for the taxes"
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Best value for spending your points tends to be:

    1) cheap flights to Europe. £17.50 each way plus 4,500 points.
    2) very cheap USA internal flights. Often £1.50 plus points each leg.
    3) Club class tickets long haul (esp if you start the journey outside the UK). Still gave taxes to pay, often similar to an economy fare.
    4) Booking WT+ for cash and upgrading to Club with Avios.

    Others may have another view.

I'll add another: one way flights. Whilst many airlines charge a hefty premium for one-way flight those bought on Avios are one half of the Avios needed for a return.

I've got flights booked next year that, as one-ways, retail for £5k but were bought for 20k Avios and taxes.
