Transferring car tax before October

I've just been given a car by a friend, we have done the car paperwork but I was wondering what happens with the tax disc?

I know rules are changing from October but what happens now? I've googled but could only find info for the new rules.

Do I need to complete any paperwork to transfer the tax disc into my name?

I was also wondering about SORN, do I need to declare it, car is currently in a private garage, with tax but currently no insurance.

I think I will start using it in 2 or so weeks so will get insurance then, do I need to declare SORN in the mean time?

AFAIK the "new"rules apply from the 1st October so anything before then is as it is now meaning that you inherit the remaining VE duty as indicated on the disc. However it MUST be insured to be driven or kept on a public road but as it's still taxed, it dosn't need to be declared SORN'd while being kept off the road.
    PLEASE NOTE

  • If its not insured it needs to have a SORN completed or you will get a fine from DVLA, if its parked in a garage or not.

Best to SORN it now and take out insurance and VED when you want to drive it.

  • Thanks for the info, I just phoned the DVLA to confirm as there were conflicting answers on here.

You do not need to SORN a car if it has no insurance, you only need to SORN a car if it has no road tax.

...except it's been illegal to have a taxed but uninsured car for the last couple of years. Have a google for the Continuous Insurance rules.

Until 1st Oct, the situation on tax when a car changes owner will remain exactly the same as it always has. The tax will transfer. If it's SORNed, the buyer will need to reSORN.

After 1st Oct, the vendor will get a tax refund automatically, and the buyer will need to retax or SORN.

I just re-read the continuous rules.

So does that mean that the DVLA gave jefflemon wrong advice.

I can't see how they can both be right.
