Hi, I am in the process of setting up my bank account online. When I put my account number in it will not accept it as it is only eight numbers long and it is saying there should be nine numbers in the account number. I am sure I read somewhere that one of the account numbers forms part of the sort code. Just wondering if that is the number that is missing. Account is with Coventry Building Society. Thanks for any help

The Coventry Building Society is a building society, not a bank.
It therefore uses HSBC for it's banking services. It's account number with HSBC is 51172859
You should also have a Coventry Building Sociey Account number (may be called a roll number or reference number). This should be nine digits.
Edit: Beaten to it by 2010 0 0

Sort code is 6 digits, often written as three groups of two digits, sometimes separated by hyphens.
 eg Nationwide 07-01-16
Account number in the UK is always 8 digits (which may include one or more leading zeros)
Building societies may also use other number formats as noted above.
Where are you trying to set up internet banking? If it is with Coventry BS then it's a slightly involved process as they use enhanced security which requires them to send you a card containing response values that you give when signing in.0

Thanks for your replies. I have sorted it now. Apparently I have got to wait for them to send security details through. Just me trying to set it up to soon. Thanks again for your replies0

You won't use your account number - they send you a web login ID (mix of letters and numbers, eg something you'll never remember....), possibly an activation code (been a looong time since I opened my Cov account), and a grid card (if you've ever played battleships you'll be ok!).
Unfortunately you always need the grid card to sign in, so good idea to scan it and keep copy somewhere secure. You can get replacements, but will be through the post.0
