Would definitely have the car checked over - my old Matiz had a cracked radiator and the coolant was leaking, but my OH's old Rover was burning the coolant off.

As its only the expansion bottle and heater matrix was empty, there may have been enough water in the radiator circulating around the engine to keep it from going pop.
I would re-fill and change the thermostat and keep on eye on the coolant level and temperature."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0
