Hi

I noticed that roadworks on the m62 started last week on the Manchester side j20 onwards. Odd thing is that there is a big flashin sign at the side of the road saying speed cameras in enforcement but as you travel along I don't see any yellow cameras...is this just some dumb trick to make us stick to the limit or are they hidden somewhere and not the yellow things that you are used to!!

The signs will go up before the cameras.

Is it on the managed motorway section with the variable speed limit shown on the gantries? If so the cameras are on the back of the gantry so will flash you from the rear if you speed past them.

Of course, you won't be speeding will you so this shouldn't be an issue? ;)

Nope. These are for planned roadworks around the M62 (not the managed motorway section from Huddersfield to Cas).

Noticed this last month on the way to Manchester Airport. The signs were there but the cameras weren't yet installed.

The roadworks signs have been up for about 5 or 6 weeks with the 50mph signs as well. At the moment everyone just seems to ignore them as the cameras have not yet been installed. I believe that the work planned is for upgrading the M62/M60 to the north of Manchester into a manged motorway just as on the Hudds to Cas section of the M62. I would assume that cameras will be going up eventually, might be a big shock to a lot of motorists when they do!

I thought most of the motorway works used the average speed cameras these days rather than the old yellow boxes?

They now have average speed cameras positioned over the lanes. Best way to test them out OP is to put your foot down and see what happens. ;)

Having travelled that stretch over the last 3 weeks the annoying part about it is that there is about 12 miles of cones on the hard shoulders and speed limits with the odd sign warning about workforce in road. However, 99% of the time there are never ANY workmen on the complete stretch. The 1% is normally a single van on the hard sholder and a couple of workmen halfway up the bank.

I would like to think that it was due to the time that I was travelling but as I travelled anywhere between 2PM and 1AM, I find that hard to believe

Will somebody tell me how a managed motorway works better.

Assuming that it is possible, due to the volume of the traffic to achieve anywhere near the aspirational speed limit, how does varying the speed limit and causing bunching actually help?

Varying the speed limit stops bunching.

Surely only if the limit is increasing as you go along?

From what I saw many moons ago on the M42 instead of a constant stream of traffic you ended up with bunches. I suppose it allows those coming on to the motorway to join in a relatively traffic free area.

And don't talk to me about using the hard shoulder as a 4th lane that suddenly turns into a lane only for the next junction.
