Buyer says item not working... what would you do?

Sold a CPU from my old PC which worked spot on, and even chucked in the motherboard free, as well as some thermal paste and a fan too as didn't think it worth much. Both components worked, I just wanted an upgrade. Had positive feedback too.

Buyer a month after opened a case saying the CPU isn't working. I know I'm probably stuffed on this one, as imo seller could have damaged it himself by badly fitting or overclocking etc. Don't think he has used it in the motherboard supplied but a different one.

He claims to have only just got round to install it.

Have I got a leg to stand on here or is it tough t*ts? Item was £79 for a phenom CPU (think he massively overpaid and getting buyers remorse imo). Its also out of the 14 day return policy I gave.

    What did the feedback say?
I've had something in the past where a buyer left feedback, tried to sell the item, didn't, then complained it was faulty, I refused a return and Ebay sided with me.
It probably depend on the way the wind blows if/when someone at Ebay looks at it.

    Just says thanks!
I've asked them if they've used it in the motherboard I supplied or one they bought.
  • most people havent a clue how to fit this sort of item but think they can do it because they found a vide on youtube :rotfl: or you might get the old one sent back instead :-(

if they do case, you will need to refund, even if it was the buyers incompetance that killed it. at least you found out quickly, buyers can open paypal cases for 180 days now

I wrote down the serial code, stepping etc on the listing, although I doubt that will count as 'evidence' as the buyer could say I made it up.

Will ask him to send it back, he messaged this morning saying he bought a 2nd hand motherboard off ebay and it didn't work with that, then bought a new one which also didn't work so reckons its the CPU.
