What is family credit?

My son has just started year 3 and came home with a letter today asking if he can go on a 3 day school trip. He is desperate to go on it but it costs more than I can afford. However at the bottom of the form it says that if you get family credit then the trip will be paid for for you. I get working tax and child tax credits but ive never heard of family credit? Can anyone help?

Family Credit was scrapped in 1999 when it was replaced by Working Families Tax Credit.

Working Families Tax Credit was scrapped in 2003 when it was replaced by Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

So either it's an old draft the school is using or someone in admin is unaware of the various name changes.

Tell the school what you get and they may point you in the right direction.,

If there's assistance for that reason, I'd have expected it for Income Support, Income Based JSA too.
