There are loads of plates for sale on eBay starting from £19.99 - buy it now.

Of course you also have to pay the £80 fee to DVLA to transfer it onto your vehicle.

Out of interest if it is a brand new vehicle that hasn't been registered do you need to pay this? Or is it just part of the first registration fee?

Also if the reg you want spells a name or word in any way the DVLA will have already removed it from the pool of numbers on general release so that it can be sold for more money either on the web site or at auction.

Current plates are 64, you won't be able to get a 15 until next year.

The 15 plates will be released for sale in December 2014, the DVLA will put all plates up for for sale in December prior to them being put on general release on 1st march

As I understand it if you buy a plate that is on a retention certificate then the transfer fee has already been paid so the dealer could get that number allocated to your brand new car.

But I wouldn't recommend that - better to get it with whatever plate the dealer has and then transfer your new plate over - 'free' if it's on a retention cert.

When you come to sell the car you have the option of keeping your plate and the car normally reverts to the original number the dealer obtained for it.

But the cheap plates at £19.99 are usually on a vehicle (such as a moped for example) and need to be transferred from vehicle to vehicle at the standard fee of £80.

I've never been in the position to transfer a plate directly to a brand new as yet unregistered car with no plates.

I wouldn't want a plate with any year related number on it.

OK you can flaunt your 'new car' for 6 months then it becomes an 'old car'.

I prefer dateless plates - the cheaper the better - preferably from NI.

Then no-one can tell straight away at a glance what year it is.

    Ice

if you assign a personal plate to a car as its first registered number then you still have the option of retaining it when you sell the car

what will happen is the DVLA will allocate the car with an age related plate from numbers that were never used

To me, a cheap Nor'n Iron "private" plate just screams that you're embarrassed about the age of your car, but too tight/poor to put a "proper" "private" plate on.

Nobody actually cares what age your car is.

21 minutes - I wondered how long it would take for someone to say that.

I just want to opt out of the whole 'Keeping up with the Joneses' - 'my car is newer than yours !!!!!'.

Our current NI plate has Mrs Iceweasel's initials and we might just keep it and transfer to our next car.

Y'see, that's my point. You don't need to opt out, because you just don't opt IN in the first place. It really only becomes an issue if you think it's an issue - and that's exactly what a cheapie plate shouts to me, that you think it IS an issue, and are trying to hide the fact.

Nobody but you & her know it's her initials - unless you've got a line of text along the bottom of the plate explaining that DIW1234 means Doris IceWeasel?

I agree with AdrianC but if it bothers people that much it's far cheaper to change your name to your current reg. :rotfl:
