Rubbish Garage!

In March we bought our car from Pentagon Peugeot in Burton on Trent - I realised yesterday that the tax had expired 31/08 & we hadn't had a reminder. Immediately stopped driving it (!) and husband went on the bus to work while I said I would sort out the tax. Having gone to check my filing for the V5C certificate I couldn't find one and realised this could be why we never got a reminder. Called the garage & they said due to a 'problem in admin' it hadn't been sent off to get the owner changed & they still had it in their name - I realise we should have probably noticed but with it being the first time we've had to tax it I never even realised we hadn't had it back with our names on. They posted it on and I received it today, have taken it to the post office to tax and now found that not only did they never send it off to change the owner they also told us the wrong tax bracket for the car, we were told by the garage it was £30 (it even said this on the advert online) for the year & having taxed it today it's actually £110! I have called the garage to complain about all of this and all they've said is that they don't know why the reg doc wasn't sent off, apparently it was just found upstairs for some reason, sorry for the inconvenience & for telling us the wrong tax band. Wondering if there's any further I can go to complain about it?

Do you have a copy of the original advertisement anywhere, or was it written down anywhere they claimed you could tax it for £30

Did you not take the V5C/2 slip away with you when you purchased the car? That is your evidence/reminder.

I don't understand what you are meaning when you say 'They posted it on and I received it today'

    Received what? The V5C/2?

If so, it's as much your fault as the seller's.

You should have been given the V5C/2 along with the keys to the vehicle.

I wouldn't have driven off without it.

It doesn't matter a jot that they didn't send off the rest of it.

But if it makes you happy to blame someone else that's fine.

Never rely on reminders - to do so is to rely on royalmail which isn't something I'd suggest
