pre university gap year claim job seekers allowance help

My daughter who is 20 done an access to h.e diploma course in September 2013/June 2014, in which she applied for university. Due to a family bereavement she had to deffer her university entry until September 2015.
The university have let her do this and she now has a confirmed place for 2015.

In effect she is now on a gap year however she has been looking for work for some months and isn’t getting any interviews.

Even though she has a confirmed place at university for next September, could she sign on universal credit/job seekers allowance in her year before university?

She is willing to give up her place is she can find an adequate full time job.

I have made her aware she may not be able too.

The simplest way to get an answer is probably to just start the claim and see what they say.
  • There seems little back up in these situations and I wouldnt be surpised if she were told she didnt qualify..difficult times

Ask someone who knows. I don't see why not though.

Personally I find this a worrying statement. Does she really want to do the course or is it to fill in time because she doesn't have "an adequate full time job"?

For the jobsearch she has been doing for the last month or so, what has she been looking for? Only permanent work? Only in a field relevant to her proposed degree area?

she does want to do the course she has done a college course to get her relevant qualifications like i said she has to deffer due to a family berevement.

she has been looking for any work from tempory/part time to full time in all areas not just her degree area as at present she isnt qualified for that type of work but has been looking at retail, cleaning, call centre/sales and has handed out numerous cv's around town and spends a few hours a day online applying for jobs. she was searching whilst in college also.

Of course she can, but to get JSA she'll just have to jump through all the hoops like the rest of us - meaning proving adequate job seeking activities each time she goes to sign on.

She doesn't have to give up her place while she's job seeking. I presume the OP thought that having a place at Uni in 12 months time might affect her claim. It doesn't, as long as she is job-seeking.

However, she possibly needs to keep quiet the fact that she is only looking for work for 12 months, unless it's a temp job she's applying for. Most employers won't employ someone in a permanent job if they KNOW the person is only around for a year.

Retail will start to pick up and recruit seasonal workers (I'm not going to mention the name of the season!!!) So will Royal Mail.
