Old Halifax Reward accounts question

Back in the early days where you could have several Reward accounts, OH and I opened 3 each. I 'worked' mine and still get the £5 on each of them, every month.

He did nothing with his and all 3 lapsed when we first got the letters about having to set up D/D's in order to keep the reward payments. He never set up any D/D's

The account names never changed, they are still visible when he logs in and are listed as 'Reward Account' (s).

One gets used now and I recently set up 2 D/D's (for him) on this account to see if the Reward payment would be automatically triggered but it wasn't.

So, question is, might he be able to get these accounts running as Reward accounts again if he fulfills the D/D and pay in criteria now? Or has the fact he was a lazy git for so long put paid to that for good?

If he calls Halifax will they remove 2 of the Reward accounts now or might he keep them because he already has them?

Basically what I'm asking is there any way now, to get back to the original 3 accounts = £15 a month situation.

I thought they've changed it now so that even if you have three, only one will get the £5 a month reward?

No (thankfully! :D). Maybe you're thinking of Nationwide FlexDirect?

OP, in your (his) shoes I'd set up all the DDs and then visit branch 3 times, each time asking to have one of the accounts formally re-designated a Reward account. In other words, softly softly catchee monkey. ;)

Are they not all still Reward accounts?

If they had been downgraded, then would the OP not see that on online banking or have got a letter?

He should have no problem re-instating one account by setting up DDs and paying in the £750 per month now required, but if our experience is anything to go on, he will get nowhere with the other two.

My OH had 2 Reward Accounts when they brought in the DD requirements. He did set up the 2 DDs for each account, but there was apparently a problem with one of them on one account, so it was not paid out correctly.

This led to the £5 Reward not being paid, which was the point at which we realised there was a problem. We contacted the charity who had set up the DD, they could see no problem at their end with their set-up procedure, but agreed that the DD had been returned unpaid. So they had automatically set up the DD a second time.

Halifax then denied it had ever been set up in the first place, and OH had no actual proof. Even though it had appeared on the account on his internet banking. They claimed there was no record of that and that he had not fulfilled the T&Cs by having 2 DDs set up by the required date.

When challenged on this, they then called the new "only one sole account" rule into play and refused to re-instate the account. He made a complaint but got nowhere.

Well yes and no. Yes because that's how they're displayed online, and no because despite meeting the funding and DD requirements the account in question hasn't paid a Reward. Which is why I suggested 'formally' redesignating it.

OP, if he has been overdrawn that could explain the loss of the fiver.

I don't know the answer to your question about the fivers, but have you each received a £100 switching bonus from the Halifax?

If not, you should consider switching another account into Halifax.

Were the 2 DDs actually paid out in the month?

No, we don't have overdrafts by choice on any of our accounts so that wouldn't apply.

I think your advice to visit a branch is good. I just need to work on him first to persuade him he can do this. :)

    I have. He hasn't.

Unfortunately he wont deal with anything to do with finances or the run of the mill practical stuff of life. I do what I can online in his name (with his blessing) but there's a lot I can't do as some of it requires phone calls etc.

The M&S switch offer would put him in a tailspin with the amount of phone call you need for that one!

    Thanks all. :)
