Every time

As an occasional private seller I don't often list on ebay any more (or buy from it for that matter), but when I do sell I use the auction format only. Yet every time I do I get a message from someone asking for a BIN price. While trying to be reasonable about it (I totally get the "don't ask don't get" mentality) surely if I wanted to offer a BIN I would have included it in the first place? Yes I know it wouldn't take much effort for me to adjust the listing and swallow the extra fees and the occasional request is fine, but it happens with every listing now. The stuff I sell isn't particularly valuable or sought-after but I'm wondering if this is some kind of default mentality with ebay buyers these days. It then led me to wonder if people are so used to traders and commercial companies all having their ebay outlet stores that the traditional auction format is going out of fashion.

Thoughts?

When listing an auction add to the bottom-I intend to let the auction run, please don't ask for buy it now price as there isn't one.

This would involve the reading of a description, it doesn't help.

I have one popular listing that is fixed price with best offer. I have within the listing to only offer on two or more lots. I get at least one offer per day for a single item. I'm happy to get the interest and knock a small amount off.

If you're getting offers/messages on a listing that means people are looking at them. These days on Ebay that is an achievement in itself.

Sorry to butt in on OP question but as a new seller this topic has been bothering me - if I wanted to accept an offer before end of auction, how do I accept when no bid has been placed?
I accept payment only through pay pal but can't find out the correct procedure for this.

Hmmmm so people are too lazy to read the description and they hop on the "what's your BIN price" bandwagon anyway? Sums it all up really

Or maybe sometimes a buyer needs something with desperation so decides to take a chance and contact?

Over the May bank holiday weekend DS's car ignition broke. He needed to get into work on the Monday so tracking a new one down was a priority and with most scrap yards closed until the Tuesday we messaged every seller within a 30 mile radius asking if they had BIN's on their item and if we could come and pick it up. All were as helpful as possible and we secured a deal with a guy 30 miles away, collected the ignition, fitted it and got DS back on the road.

You get their phone number or email address and then get paid via bank transfer or cheque - no paypal fees or final value fees, everyone's a winner, well other than greedy ebay.

  • This gripe is of a similar ilk to mine. People that want to pop round and collect to save 1 or 2 pounds postage and wont take no for an answer when you are clearly running an on-line shop and accept only PayPal.
