Noggings

Hi,

I would like to strengthen the existing joists in my shed roof by putting some noggins between them. Existing joists are 2x3, and I will use the same for noggins. Can anybody let me know whether I should use screws or timber nails to fix noggins to the joists.

I always use screws, they are slightly easier to drive in and grip/hold in. 100mm No 6 should be fine.

Normally I would use nails ( for noggins) , but as you are fixing above your head and near a cheap thin roof, would in your case a few screws seems reasonable.

Noggins won't strengthen any joists, but will make the construction more rigid - is this what you mean you want to do??

If so - then +1 with Phil - pilot hole thru the joist too.

You drill a narrower hole than the screw you're going to use, prevents the wood from potentially splitting.

Completely agree with all the posts above.

As your joists are only 2" x 3" I would use screws. As already mentioned above the noggins are to make the structure more rigid by preventing the joists twisting.

The pilot hole made by a 4mm wood drill bit will not only prevent the joist from splitting but will save you a lot of effort in screwing the noggings.

How far apart are your joists?

  • There is not standard between joists. min 50 cm up to 80 cm in some cases.

My suggestion is to do three lines of staggered noggins.
