Assuming that after 1st October you will know the new address where the car will be kept, why not sort out your insurance between 1st and 4th October? Regarding your worries about not receiving documentation from the insurer, I'm pretty sure that I haven't received any "hard copy" from my previous 3 insurers - everything has been received digitally. Do many insurers still use "snail mail"?

Am I just going to have to take out the policy at a higher risk address (costing me more money!)

You can't just choose which address to use - you just have to answer questions honestly.

Sounds like you need to find an insurer that allows you to do change of addresses online without admin charges.

There must be millions of people out there who are in a similar situation and they seem to manage just fine.

I doubt it. The majority of people will know where they will be living in a few weeks time. If you don't know the address then you can't get useful quotes I'm afraid.
  • Where the vehicle is kept overnight, where you live and where you want documents sent are three separate questions. For most of us they have one and the same answer so most online systems dont ask the three but every insurance system I've seen allows different answers to be given to all of them via call centres etc

If you dont know then you will have to give the answers as per the date of inception and do a mid term adjustment when you know where you'll be living/ the car kept.
