The kids have got a seperate account on our computer but i rarely let them surf becasue im really worried about what pop ups might come on. Recently we've been plagued with !!!!!! site pop ups/ads, pretty bloomin explicit too, certainly dont want my kids seeing these pics!
So my question is 2 fold
1. how do we rid our (mum and dad) account of this rubbish
2. how to i ensure that the kids wont get it?

I'm sure that there are lots of pop-up blockers that others can recommend.
Me personally....I was so fed up with it that I switched from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox about nine months ago and am pretty sure that I haven't had a single pop-up since."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

You could try Microsoft beta anti spyware software. It is free, updated regularly and appears to be getting good reviews.

This is very effective when run in safe mode and comes with active system watcher thingy's.
Are you running XP if so visit https://www.grc.com there you will find shoot the messenger. This program shuts a port that can be exploited by people? for pop ups0 -
Try running the spybot incase you have spyware running in your machine and then what we have done for our kids is put nortons internet security on this has parental control and you can set it for kids, teenagers and then adults so have a full range of protection and nothing untowards has popped up.The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0

First thing to do is go into internet properties from control panel (or just right click the explorer icon and select properties) and delete all cookies and files. This should stop many of them. Then get a pop-up blocker (Windows XP has one built in now, or google does a free one). Then get the adaware spyware software and run that and a decent virus checker as other posters have said.
I don't wish to cause marital problems but !!!!!! pop-ups generally only appear because someone has been searching for !!!!!! sites in the first place.
Of course I never get pop-ups on my computer.

Regarding what security to use - if you look at FAQ's there is a lot of info under "Internet Security - Free, Viruses", also you could look at the sticky at the top of the board - "What security do you use" to see what others have on their computers. That way you can decide which ones to put on your computer - you don't need to have loads and loads of software, just enough to do the job!
It is possible you have a virus or other intrusion so update any antivirus/ anti-spyware software that you already have. Let us know how you get on.Torgwen..........

All you really need is a decent browser. Get Mozilla Firefox, it has an inbuilt popup blocker. This isn't completely full proof though. People will always find ways round. The latest are Flash based popups which by default Firefox doesn't block, but has the ability to. To enable it have a look at:

Anti-spyware such as AdAware and Spybot are good for cleaning out anything that has already got onto your system, but generally clean, rather than prevent. Many firewalls also have popup blockers inbuilt.
You could also look into paying for a content blocker if you were really worried."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
