Spiders... argh!

Hey gang,

We have a car thats been sorn since 2010 and sat on the drive round the back. Now it's parked next to a hedge so naturally you'd expect one or two spiders to bridge a web between the car and the hedge but there are TONS!

I got in it today and even ended up putting my head in a huge cobweb - inside the car

Wing mirrors are also the usual targets but the wheel arches... oh my.. they love the wheel arches, brake calipers, alloys and chassis crevices etc.

Now I don't mind the little critters on the outside.. when the car goes on the road they'll soon vanish and those that survive in the wing mirrors.. well they're smart so they can stay but the spiders INSIDE.. how on earth am I going to get them to move out?

Been a very good year for spiders it seems. My back garden is awash with them.

    All shapes and sizes.

Get some conkers. Maybe an old wives tale. But putting conkers in ther corners of a room is supposed to deter them.

Tried and trusted method vacuum them up.

What comes after "spider" in "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly"? Put one of those in the car to get rid of the spiders - although unless you're careful you'll end up with a horse in there, and the song finishes with "She's dead, of course".

Cruel but I think your only option is vacuuming to be sure you get rid of them (other than manually grabbing them and putting them out).

We have a problem with spiders in the house in the summer and I can guarantee they don't give a toss about conkers!
  • You'll have to vacuum then wash interior, and then spray inspect killer liberally about, suspect the current inhabitants have laid eggs so shortly there will be umpteen thousand more, rinse and repeat vacuum/chemical spray.

I once watched a spiders nest hatch out, amazing number of the tiny things all running for cover spreading out like a wave.

In my experience fly spray is also effective against spiders in enclosed spaces. A quick spray into the gap behind the mirror takes care of those blighters. So I'd be tempted to give the inside of the car a good spray and leave it overnight.
  • Agree with vacuuming. Repeat multiple times.

Random thought, is there a spiders nest that is causing your overheating? Holding a relay open, etc.

I keep a fluffy duster in my car after one time a massive spider got in my car, and I could not drive home out of fear it would fall on me. It was about the size of my palm - horrific.

I agree about using an insecticide, but you have to get one that's formulated for spiders as I don't think most normal bug sprays work. Something like this sprayed liberally in all the hidey-holes like vents once you've cleaned the car and vacuumed as many out as possible would probably do the job.

Personally I would torch the car, but i guess that doesnt help you with needing a car...
