claiming bank charges if in debt

hi ... i am a total newbie here so hi to all..

i had to give up my job up working for an org in the city a couple of years ago due to personal issues. at the time of of my departure from my job i had/have 3 accounts. 1 is a current account with HSBC which has an overdraft that i have on many occasion dipped into before rectyfiying and been charged for. This is the main a/c for keeping my head above water for incoming and outgoing. the other 2 are credit card accounts..with Alliance & Leicester and CO-OP...

i owe £600 on the A&L account and around £8k on the CO-OP account. Due to my circumstances i am obviously struggling as am on support income.

i have also struggle to make regular payments at intervals and have many times either been charged by HSBC or the credit card companies i mention. can someone advise me on whether i should commence the procedure to reclaim my charges, what pitfalls i can expect (ie: will the credit card companies simply close the account and ask for the amount in full?) and also where/how i'd go about opening a "parachute account" in my situation.

many thanks

deeno

  • I successfully reclaimed £1300 of bank charges from HSBC this month despite owing them over £9000 across three different accounts. Mind you, a 'parachute' account is always a good idea. Why would you want to stay with a bank that screwed you around anyway?

I'm wondering whether your debts have been sold on at all? I'm looking for similar advice and don't want to rock the boat with those creditors who are being reasonable at the mo!!

I'm with the Halifax, who are, by all accounts and in my experience, totally unreasonable bankers, so I may not be quite as fortunate as you, but may I ask whether tyou were still within your O/D limits albeit £9000? If you weren't within, were you still on "good terms" with them or had they sent you a default letter/ threatened legal action etc?
