Ipad stolen from hotel room

Hi, I;m not sure if this is the best place to ask for advice, but here goes.

I went to a wedding on Friday at a Principal Hayes hotel and stayed over night, when we came to pack our things up after breakfast on Sat we noticed that our Ipad and be stolen from the room.

This was very upsetting as there was information and pics on there with sentimental value, especially as my husband has been diagnosed as terminally ill, so i was really upset to see it had been taken.

The operations manager has confirmed that after reading the key card lock that ther was someone other than us that had entered the room. and they are meeting with police on friday to discuss.

From my part, we are out of pocket for the ipad and I expect the hotel to reimburse us for the stollen ipad, as it was taken out of our room that we assume would be secure.

Am I right to thinking that the hotel should be getting us a replacement ipad? and how is the best way to ensure this happens?

Many thanks, Emma

Sounds like the hotel is taking it seriously if they're going to speak to the Police.

Either the hotel staff aren't trustworthy, or the hotel's door security system is too easily hacked. Either way, I'd see them as liable and expect them to reimburse you the full cost of replacement.

Never ever leave anything of value in a hotel room most hotels will not accept responsibly unless they provide room safes or they are left at reception, I think you will have problem getting them to replace or reimburse you .

Was there a safe in the room? If there was and it wasn't used then they may use that as a get out to avoid compensating.

Lots of times hotels do say they don't take liability for personal possessions left in the hotel room.

    Hopefully you'll get compensation.
  • I dont think there was a safe in the room, and i have checked on the website and it does not state that the rooms come with a safe in them

They'll almost certainly have individual safes somewhere behind reception and they'll be a term somewhere that anything valuable should be placed there. They'll also likely say that anything left in the room is the guests responsibility.

It's sad for you that it's been stolen but I'd be surprised if you were to get anything from the hotel, except possibly a free nights stay or something. At least they're cooperating with the police.

Do they state anything about valuables on the website? Most hotels now seem to have either safes in the rooms or other secure storage facilities.
  • there is nothing about safe or security of valuables that i can see on the website.

Try your household contents insurance. Mine covers things like this.

Unless the hotel was negligent or one of the staff stole it (or you handed it in at reception for safe keeping or put it in the safe) then their liability is limited to £50 (The Hotel Proprietors Act)

Also, as I understand it they must display a sign saying this at reception?
