Quote for concrete shed base

Evening all,

I've had a quote to lay a concrete shed base 6.7m(22ft) x 4.25m (14ft) x 150mm (6 inches) for a shed/workshop I'm getting. Ground will be cleared by myself before hand.

I've been quoted by a company an estimate between £1400 - £1700 and I live in Southern England. As I've never had anything like this done before I was wondering if anyone could confirm if this is a good quote (going rate) or not please?

Many thanks

have you considered DIY? probably come it at half the cost.
  • About £300 in materials if they put a hardcore and DPM down.
£1400 for half a days work for two men ?

Sub floor sand and cement screeders on site get paid £7 a m sq if they are lucky.
Have you called a couple of travellers ?
I do Contracts, all day every day.
  • Phone round more places and get more quotes.
I had a new garage floor done, and new garage with doors and windows for £2,700.
I had to really look round though to get this and was quoted from this to £4,300.
  • Now that is a big shed! If you having a shed that size I am presuming you are a handy DIY'er!

I did my own 3m x 2m shed base last year, and the hardest part was digging the base in the first place.

I had the benefit of borrowing a cement mixer, and the materials I needed came to about £140 all in.

I used the instructions on Garden Buildings Direct

For your job using the Source4me calculators you need:

    Subbase 75mm
    MOT 1 - 5.5 Ton (£24 ton) = £108

    Concrete 75mm
    Ballast - 3.5 ton (£27 ton) = £94.50

    Cement - 28 Bags (25kg bag @ £4.20) = £117.60

    Damp Proof Membrane
I didn't bother with this, but I have added it in for completeness!
15mx4m 1200gauge membrane + special membrane tape to join together

    £45 (Screwfix price)

    Wood Shuttering
    Gravel Boards 3m x8 = £31.20

    Pegs to support boards x 24 = £12

    Cement Mixer Hire
    £25 a weekend = £25

    TOTAL = £434.20 - That's a saving of a grand

You also need to add in a crate of beer for your mates as shifting 10 ton of material is hard graft!

Little tip- When mixing the cement use a bucket as a measure!

*Assuming you already have a wheelbarrow and can pick up the mixer as delivery costs can be high*

you could also look at a minimix company who supply concrete, then you just need to dig the base.

Work out how much material you're going to need, but for a slab that size check how much one of these Readymix places will charge and have a couple of mates there to help you lay it.
