Your neighbours porch looks nice & suits the house.
Maybe you should add that to the mix?0 -
I think you should do what makes you feel happy. Other people can give opinions but the final choice is yours. If you want that door and to look different then good on you.0

I'd just swop the sliding glass front door for a upvc one with side light/s. Oak will cost a lot and is not really in keeping with the type of house..although of course its really up to you!
Remove the cladding and render painted cream is good and will freshen up the front..along with perhaps a couple of potted shrubs or hanging basket.
Your house is by the way, not a sows ear..more of a plain Jane that needs a little makeover..!0 -
Oh really
I thought it would look abit different to every other house in the street and was hoping more for 'Oww that house looks lovely' ...Oh dear, haha. I took the inspiration from a house on 'Help my house is falling down' as they had a similar style house but a single door withiut the side panels and I thought it looked lovely and homely ;/. Any suggestions on what would look nice?
Honestly, there is a house similar to yours (and also one like yours but minus the cladding and a whiteish creamish colour) a few streets away with a door similar to the ones you like and it looks absolutely ridiculousIf women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -
I'd leave well alone, at most a small awning to keep the rain off while getting the key in the door. Spend the money on replacing the endless grey slabs and improving the garden to boost the look of the house0

Thank you all so much
I'm not going to go for the oak now, I've gone back to the original idea of a black composite door which alot of the houses have and looks really nice with the white framed sidelights. I think we'll go with the cream render too

We went for dark Blue with modern(blocks of colored glass on onscure) looking glazing inserts, obscure full hight sidelight.
Black is getting a bit common and I think black it is a bit hard and flat, the blue is softer but still different.
If you remove the porch space won'tt hat need making into internal xpace, have you had that priced, I like a covered area over the door.
Don't forget to cost out painting the garage door to match the door color.0 -
If it's any consolation, we've just chosen a front door.
When the window co. man got out his first brochure, we both took one look and said something like: "Our place is a simple, rendered, country bungalow, with no pretensions, so none of those will be in any way appropriate."
A different, brochure of simpler designs emerged from the briefcase! :rotfl:
PS Some people have had problems with coloured composite doors facing the sun. Might be worth checking this out. Not a problem for us, as our front faces due north.0 -
I loved the ideas you have, love the part rendered front to update the look of the house, plus is cost effective as its not a total render being applied. Look into those renders that are coloured so no upkeep. Also loved your door no 3, it's fab!
Good luck with your home improvements, I bet you'll have it lovely!M0
