Nationwide card reader

I received a card reader in 2011. I still have it in the box and the letter saying that it is optional - I've never used it.
I have destroyed the card that came with the account as I would never need it.
A couple of days ago I tried to transfer money out to an account I have used before and it says I need the card and card reader. It seems to allow £100 now but not £400 (I'm trying for £15000).
Customer services says that my account has been card reader enabled so it is necessary - they were surprised I could do anything without it. I've ordered a new card but don't want to have it hanging around for security reasons.
Does anyone know when this might have happened and is a card reader now mandatory for Nationwide transactions or is the status reversable.
Customer services also said I could go to a branch with ID and make the transfer. The branch said I needed the card to do that. Does anyone know who is correct?
Thinking of closing my Nationwide accounts as I don't want yet another card and card reader to take care of.

There has been no change.
You can log in using the card and reader or log in using memorable information.
If you log in using the latter method the need to use the card and reader for transactions is random.
Generally speaking it isn't needed to pay money to existing payees but sometimes you are required to use it.
To set up a new payee the card and reader is nearly always required.0 -
Thanks.
I'll keep trying then and presumably it will work.0 -
Hmm.
Tried £1000 and it worked.
Oddly, I set up a new payee a week or so ago and it let me transfer £1000 to that too - still never used a card reader.
Made another two £3000 transfers. I'll try more tomorrow.0 -

Have you tried the mobile phone app?
For some reason when I move the £1k from my wifes account back to my current account it goes through every month fine but when I try to do the same with my nationwide account back to the same current account it always asks for the card reader verfication.
Do the same on the mobile app and it goes through fine. Cannot remember if you need the card reader to set up the app though.
The card reader is a standard one, you can use it interchangeably with other brands readers. 1 debit card really doesnt take up much storage space in a home.0 -
I find it strange that the limit is £10,000 for a transaction, but you can make as many £10,000 transactions as you want.
I recently transferred £50,000 in five consecutive transactions to my wife's Nationwide A/C - who is an existing payee. I had to use the card reader for the first three transactions then it accepted the last two.0 -
Thanks.
Looks like the site is more usable than I thought.
Lets pretend that is by design.0 -
You could always chop an inch off the right-hand end of the card - will still work with the reader, but no use for anything else0
