So I have a couple questions. I have read on the confirm that some people have mentioned you wont earn cashback on purchases at tesco direct (online). Has anyone had different results

Secondly after asking tesco webchat what their merchant catagory code is, they flat out refused to disclose it claiming it was confidential. Is this right?.

To get around it, purchase a Tesco gift card from Tesco and use that to pay for Tesco Direct purchase.

No need to find out MCC, etc. It's got nothing to do with it being confidential. Webchat lacks the knowledge to advise you and do not want to appear stupid.

ME: This is not something that my credit card provider determines, rather it is how tesco decide to handle their payments. So someone within the organization should hopefully be able to answer this

ME: typical Supermarket Merchant Category Codes include: 5411, 5499 and 9751. However I need to confirm both the grocerys ordered online and orders from tesco direct fall into one of these buckets. If not, then what is the specific number

That does not exclude Tesco Direct. I have used Tesco gift cards to order CDs.

Having looked into this I can confirm that depending on your card issuer it will show on your statement as Branch 6155 Tesco Stores LTD or Tesco Direct.

That's the Tesco store number, not the MCC, the way I read it.

The problem is that very few, if any, customer facing departments will know the MCC they use or even know what it actually is. They have no need to know it and is really only of any use or interest to internal accounting departments.
