Boiler nightmare

  • I'd say pump or he didn't vent the heat exchanger after he changed the EV
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • Certificates or not, your bloke sounds like he isn't very competent.
  • Can I ask if the hot water gets slightly hot then goes coldish then the boiler bangs and overheats? If so can i suggest it may be the plate to plate heat exchanger is blocked, this heat your hot water up only and that that should be the first port of call when a diagnostic is carried out. I would agree that he sounds like he's clutching at straws and your bill is going to grow with his nose!
If you want to check this out go to the front of the boiler and ask that someone turns on the hot water tap to max then watch the temperature reading climb. If it climbs really quickly into the 90's and then 00 then starts banging I'm pretty sure its the plate to plate heat exchanger.

    Exactly this.

unclebulgaria - you seem to know your stuff. I can't believe those scoundrels changed the EV without a clue to the real problem and charged me £250 for the privilege.

What is your advice to me on what I should do next, concerning the people who fitted the EV and to actually fix the problem.

The boiler has started to work again, but not sure for how long. It worked briefly yesterday to. You described the exact fault.

Will a flush remedy the problem in most cases even if it is the Heat Exchanger?

    Apologies for the late reply.
Its possible to make a temp repair by taking the plate to plate off and flushing it through but it'll still need changing. A flush won't fix it now its blocked. I'd invest in a boiler filter at the very least. I can only sugeest you find a local engineer who has good references and try them. The problem is sludge/debris in the central heating system that blocking the small tubes in the plate to plate. A powerflush would improve it but they're not cheap.

I bought a reconditioned heat exchanger for £50. I have to give them my old one when it is removed part exchange. I also bought inhibitor and sludge remover. Now just trying to find the right person to install it all without driving me into debt.
  • It shouldn't drive you into debt. Its about an hours work, poss hour and half depending on speed of tradesman. I can't give you a definite price but I would think £60/80. I'm not there so I can't give you accurate price.
