Legal streaming methods

It appears that MSE decided to close my previous thread rather than just delete the replies that they didn't like, so I'll try again. And just to make it clear, I will not consider any method that could be considered illegal so please don't waste your time posting any.

Having decided that a minimum of £125 to get into Gleneagles for one day's play of the Ryder Cup was a bit steep for my blood, I'm now thinking I might spend a lot less to get a streaming device and access to Sky Sports for 3 days and sit in my warm, dry living room instead.

I can see that a NOWTV box with a 1 week Sky Sports pass can do this for around £20. Has anyone got any thoughts about how good this would be or if there are any better alternatives?

Technical info: I watch Freesat on a Panasonic Smart TV with apps for iPlayer, YouTube, Eurosport (only just spotted that!), and I subscribe to Netflix. I have two Windows 7 laptops, a Nexus 4 phone and a Nexus 7 tablet. My broadband download speed on Plusnet Unlimited is around 16 Mbps.

  • I like Now Tv, but I've only watched the sports channels with some free 24 hour passes I got, and they were for the F1 grand prixs. Although I've not had much problem, because it's streamed, if there is a fault from Sky's end, you might end up missing a lot of the live action. Last time that happened, they provided free vouchers for people affected, but not much consolation if you miss the live event you wanted to see.
If you have a got a friend or relative who has Sky, you could invite them round to your place and watch Sky via their Sky Go connection. The device has to be registered through their account first, but if they have a laptop, you should be able to connect it to your tv. That is perfectly legal. If, however, you were to borrow their access to Sky Go, think that wouldn't be so legal. Sky Go doesn't cost anything to an existing subscriber, and to watch Sports, they'd need to subscribe to the sports channels. In addition, you could watch it on a Nexus 7, but don't think it will connect to the TV the same way a laptop does.

Sky don't allow you to stream their content from your laptop to your TV!

NowTV is going to be your best/only option for what you want, it isn't too bad either for short term use.

Quality on live sport can get pretty rough on a TV (and this is with 60 meg fibre)

I get pretty good results on my 7" tablet with Sky Go

Radio 2 used to and Five Live now have the best pictures for the minimal outlay of £0 per month.

Gone for a NOWTV box so hopefully it'll work OK (and hopefully we'll retain the cup!).
