self employed and ctc

Hiya

Just wondered if anyone knew if when you are self employed do you need to keep a record of hrs worked each week or not? My dh works full time and I work 20 hrs a week self employed. We receive CTC and cb. Many thanks :-)

Yes you do. If they called me tomorrow and asked for proof, I'd have last years work diary, calendar, invoice book etc to show how many hours I have worked.
Plus I'd have transactions showing in my bank account for when clients paid me.

You say your dh works full time, so the hours you work won't make any difference to your tax credits or cb so they won't be interested. If he lost his job they would be.

(I'm assuming you didn't mean that you were both SE).

If there isn't any working tax credit being claimed, why does the OP need to keep records? I thought it was only WTC that can lead to a challenge to prove the amount of business activity being performed?

They can still request the details at any time regardless of whether they have a working partner.

Some cases are randomly selected as well as risk based.
But why would they want proof of something which makes absolutely no difference to the claim?

The OP will be eligible for WTC but probably doesn't get any due to income. The 30h element of WTC can increase the CTC so even if WTC is zero due to income, the 30h element can increase the CTC award. However in the OP's case the husband is working over 30 hours anyway, so her hours aren't relevant.

I don't know why, don't make the rules.

I have just seen/heard of cases where they do. As I've said in my last post it may also affect the childcare element of claimed.
Ah yes good point, if childcare is being claimed it would certainly be relevant.
