Struggling with Intarsia - any tips?

Options
I decided to try my hand at Intarsia to make some knitted jumpers with pictures for the grandchildren. I am really struggling despite making up lots of different coloured mini spools in different colours to use.

One of my problems is that with normal knitting you end up with a large loop at the end of the row unless you take avoiding action (I usually put the wool forward and slip the last stitch on each row to get round this issue.)

With intarsia, because you are effectively knitting separate blocks of colour and interweaving at the edges, you have lots of virtual row ends and so lots of big loops. Yet if I interweave the ends tightly it seems to pull it too tight.

Anyone got any tips?

I don't know if you ever managed to resolve your issues. But you mention that you have wound separate bobbins. If you have done this it makes it easier to let them hang where you finish the separate colour for that row. It means you don't have to weave to the end of the row but just switch colours and then pick up the colour again on the next row once you need it. Hope that makes sense.
