Can any one recommend the rug doctor? Just wondering what your experience of it is. We will be moving into a new home soon and wanted to give the carpets a good clean before we move anything in. thanks

It's ok, we used it after a party where we had mud, booze and food ground into the carpet and it got it out.
It took a couple attempts to get it up but it did do.0 -
They are good, but the "official" shampoo is quite expensive. But probably worth it if you're doing the whole house just as a one-off.
However, you may want to consider buying a carpet cleaner. I've had a Bissell for years, it works really well, can't fault it. With kids and pets it's worth it's weight in gold - I do the carpets maybe 2 or 3 times a year, but where it really comes into it's own is the - fairly regular ! - ad-hoc uses, e.g. when the kids spill drinks, or they or the pets walk all over the place with muddy paws
Depends on your circumstances - if you're only going to be needing it infrequently, then hiring is the way to go. But if you're likely to use it more often, it makes sense to buy one.
Bissell also offer factory-refurbished machines which can be good value :

I have no connection with Bissell, by the way, just a satisfied customer. Vax are another major manufacturer, but I've never used their products so can't comment.0 -
We are moving to a smaller place so storage is an issue, also I once had a vax (upright) for 2 years but in that time only used it about 4 times. On the last time it just blew up so it has put me off spending on another one.

I hired one last week to do the carpets in my rental and my own rugs. I used some of the left over detergent to do my sofa too. I knew the carpets were dirty but the muck that came off the sofa was an eye opener.
Highly recommended.0
