UK seeks extra power for winter

I can't say I'm surprised. We are shutting down power stations faster than they are being replaced, mostly to meet EU rules.
I don't believe Green Energy can ever meet the full demand. Solar is no use at night, when the temperature is coldest and it's dark (so more need for lights and heating) and the wind tends to drop at night too making wind power less effective. In the depths of winter, when the days are shortest, the temperature coldest (and hence demand highest) we often have very little wind too.
We need more new power stations (nuclear is the way to go in my view) but successive governments have done very little about the issue. Even then I can't help feel with the time taken to develop them we will have a serious problem in the next few years. The article already talks about paying companies to cut consumption at peak times.
