You're all missing the blindingly obvious (and cheap) one. I'm not going to say what it is because just as soon as I have soome spare cash, I'll be out on a buying spree of the best of the non-dissolved ones.
But I will give a clue:
Why do a lot of people pay apparently over the odds for things like Avengers, Allegros etc?0 -
Personally I don't think it's about trying to work out what we think is worth saving or what will be popular, with perhaps a few notable exceptions.
It's about how many of a certain model will be left in 30 years time. I was at a classic car show earlier in the summer and there were a couple of Hillman Avengers on show.
They were made in their thousands and were pretty much hated by everyone, a dreadful car and most were scrapped or dissolved in the rain, now they have a cult following. I looked at them and despite being pristine I couldn't help thinking that if I was mega rich an Avenger would be the last car I'd restore but each to their own.
Look at the Triumph Stag, or Snag as it was known. Owners couldn't wait to get rid of the unreliable V8 and install the more reliable 2.5 straight 6 now decades on people are desperately looking for a V8 to put back in.
The most unlikely cars become classics but you only make a fortune if they are rare and loads of people want one so badly that they'll pay a small fortune.
Personally I'd love to get my hands on my first car, a 1968 Honda S800 Coupe. I bought one in 1974 when I was 17 for £175 getting a decent one now would cost a lot more. :rotfl:
Stags owners replaced the original Triumph V8 with the engine it should have had from day 1, the Buick based V8 from Rover, not a straight 6.
The car I would lock away is an Audi A2.0 -

But more and more are changing back to the Triumph V - the design was sound and, in the meantime, people have worked out how to build them properly0 -
Mk1 MR2 or Mk 1 MX-5 would be a good bet.
Or if you can find a cheap one, a 2CV although the prices for those are scooting up.0 -

Actually the engine it should have had from day one was the straight six, that was the engine the car was originally designed to have. The original concept was basically the Triumph 2000 in a convertible party frock.
Sure, people put the Buik or the Rover V8 in and there were even some Ford V6 used the Triumph straight six was a popular choice. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

An un-abused mk1 Saxo VTS or 106Gti/Rally.
Some of the Rover's I can see appreciating, Tomcat turbo, high spec MG ZR/ZS/ZT, sure there was a V8 version of the ZT/75 that would be worth keeping. Also the Rover 200 BRM, they sometimes come up very cheap, I've been tempted a few times.
Another one not mentioned so far is Saab, there's plenty of Saab hardcode fans out there, get a coupe or cab and lock it away for 20 years.0 -
