Can you freeze homemade jam??

I have managed to get a heap of cooking apples and have picked a load of blackberries so plan to make some jam.

However, only have a few jars so wondered if you could freeze it??

    I don't see why not, but it would take less room in your freezer just to freeze the fruit. Then you can use it to make more jam once you've saved more jars, or use for crumbles, pies, cakes or even savoury dishes.

    Yes you can freeze jam. Once I made some and only had ramekins to put the last lot in so obviously no lid. I just put the ramekin in a food bag. Defrosted fine.

    Bear in mind that blackberries are even more 'pippy' than raspberries- they're rubbish for jam, but make good jelly, where you cook the fruit down, strain it through cotton and then boil it with sugar to make the jelly. I've got to the juice stage and then frozen the juice as it was NOT enough to make it worth the heating and boiling down from the first batch, as I have it in mind for my wedding favours
  • I made blackberry jam without the seeds, it's really much more edible that way! I picked about 800g of berries, simmered them with a little water until soft, and mashed them down with a potato masher. Then I pushed as much of the liquid through a sieve as I could (I spent ages at it trying to get every bit I could). Then I weighed that, and added about the same amount of sugar and simmered until setting point.

    It came out very sweet, so you probably could do with slightly less sugar, but it's the high sugar content that preserves the jam. I only got 2 and a half jars out of those blackberries since there was "pip waste", but I froze that and plan to put it in a batch of homebrewed cider. I'm sure you could freeze the jam too.

    If you have too much jam to put in jars, why not try making fruit leather? It keeps really well and you don't need jars.

    You could also ask some people if they have any jars you could have? I find it near impossible to throw them out!
