Has anyone else experienced a stomach bug that won't settle this summer?

I wondered if we are the only household that can't settle their stomachs after a stomach bug this summer?

We all got the bug several weeks ago and are perfectly able to get along with day to day lives but we seem to keep being taken unawares by our lack of ability to digest or have any warning that we need the loo.

My poor children are perfectly well apart from this, but is causing a few issues getting out and about

Anyone else?

No, not to this extent. I had a stomach bug a few weeks ago which lasted a whole week, severe diarrhoea to the point I was so weak I could barely move off the sofa and the most terrible fever for the first few days.

I haven't been right since in my 'movements' despite feeling perfectly fine, but not in the way of having to dash to the loo at a moment's notice.
  • Oh no, poor you and poor LO's. Stomach bugs have a nasty habit of affecting bacteria levels within the gut.

When DD was 4 she had a stomach bug for 6 weeks, vomiting every 2-3 days and diarrhoea {sp?} everyday. She lost so much weight. I took her to the Dr's 3 times before they admitted her into hospital. They took faeces, blood and urine samples and the conclusion they gave was that she had had 1 bug which lowered her immunity and leaving her susceptible to more bugs.

Have you tried introducing "good" bacteria back into their/your diets? Such as Actimel/Yakult etc?

  • A visit to the GP who may request a stool sample.

You need proper and informed medical advice on this as it depends on the cause.

You also owe it to everyone else you come into contact with as you may be infectious.
    :hello:
  • Its almost two weeks since we returned from Spain and I am still having to dash to the loo at a moments notice. I'm almost too scared to leave the house, I keep hoping it will soon pass though.

I recently experienced Colitis for the first time and was in hospital for well over a week. It was caused by a bug as I have lowered immunity. I have been eating probiotics but it took a while to get back to normal and then go the other way!!!

I agree that doctor is the way to go. You have to be very careful that your electrolytes - potassium in particular don't become too low as it can affect your heart. It needs medical attention even if you feel well as I was very surprised to find myself hospitalised for what `i thought was just a little bug. I was quite ill well critical for 12 hours due to my potassium so don't let it keep going on.

It's not fair to send your kids back to school with such a problem either for them (I had a few accidents and it really upset me nor other children).
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Yep - we've all had one that seems to have been going on and on (if it goes into this weekend it'll be doctors after that - leaving it till then as the kids seem perfectly fine in themselves and it's hopefully starting to run its course).

Before anyone says anything - not sending kids to childcare or anything like that - we've been staying in the house and not spreading the germy love.

I had norovirus a couple of years ago which left me feeling a bit funny for a couple of months afterwards. After I'd eaten, I suddenly feel really sick like I'd need to throw up for a while and then it would settle.
