On check out, the default box ticked has been 'free' express delivery with a Prime trial.
You consciously had to change that to the usual standard delivery otherwise you then hit the 'buy now' button with the prime option included.
I know this because I changed the option each time I bought something to ensure I didn't subscribe to something I didn't want.
In other words, I read the screen first.

I have just signed up for another Prime trial and a) the fact that you are signing up, and b) the need to cancel within the trial period could not be any clearer. They even allow you to cancel immediately but continue to use the rest of the trial period.
Sorry OP, I cannot believe the fault is with Amazon here.0 -
Just checked my Amazon account, luckily it said -
