Gift vouchers

My daughter bought me a restaurant voucher value £50 for Mother's Day. I used it on Friday for a meal which totalled £40.75p. I didn't expect any change but did think that they would debit the amount used and let me use the balance at a later date. They took the whole lot! Can this be legal?

It depends on the T&C's. Was it a paper voucher or one of those gift card type things? If a card, I would expect them to debit the £40.75 and leave the balance for use later. If a paper voucher, they do usually state on them that no change will be given and I'm not sure how they could have debited the £40.75 and let you use the balance at a later date.

  • It was a paper voucher. Nothing easier than to write- used £40.75 on date balance= 9.25. I did this for years in my beauty business.

If it was a paper voucher then I can understand why they didn't return the voucher to you. I don't know of anyone that would do this and would imagine that the terms and conditions specifically cover this. What would they put into the till to show that the £40.75 had been 'paid for'.

Ah, but you would have had regular customers that you saw week in week out.

The restaurant doesn't know you from Adam/Eve, so the chances are they would think it could be fraudulent. They may also need the voucher to tally up the till at the end of the evening, for their records. There are lots of places that don't give refunds back on vouchers for underspend. It is not a gift card it is a voucher you have. Smaller stores use them a lot.

One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
