You have received a bill because BT bill line rental in advance (1 month or 3 months depending on your contract).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

It depends where you live, but try your postcode in the 'Check Availability' box near the top right of the screen.

The line rental service (not cps) is only available in Hull and a small part of Yorkshire.
Plus the OP would have signed a 12 month contract with BT for line rental.

I have had the most horrendous experience with them recently. To date I have spent 24 hours either on the phone to them or on hold. In one day alone I spent 5 hrs on the phone to them and the matter is still not rectified.
Basically I was moving home and had talk talk. I asked BT to supply line and take tel no with me. Well it didn't happen . Didn't even know I had a line at new house until I got a bill for a different no. They kept promising if you could get through to have my no transfered but now after 4 weeks I have given up.
Problem is they have a new system and I am on the new system on new customer service. They cost me a fortune as I had broadband ordered with old tel no . Hvae raised 2 complaints but am not holding my breath that anything will be done.
Thing is I am only here till I get my house built so I will probably have yet more bother when I move again.
I asked for caller display 2 weeks ago and I am still waiting. i don't want to wait on hold for another 5 hrs so I have given up.
Customer service has got to be the worst I ever encountered. Talk talk would be 5 star compared to them.
All I can say is good luck!!!!
I have never met a calorie yet I didn't like!!

Caller display can be ordered (and activated within 10 minutes in my case) via an automated freephone number:

Don't forget you'll have to make at least 6 chargeable calls on BT within the quarter to get it for (almost) free.
