You are all a very touchy bunch on this thread aren't you?

You just cannot accept that a lot of people, me included want to have CASH in their hands when on holiday and not having to worry about using a card whilst away.

You go on holiday to enjoy yourself, if you don't have to worry about where you are getting your money from and any inherent issues, then all the better.

If people didn't want to take Currency with them, as you seem to think is correct, then why so many BDC, Why so many BDC websites and why , when I went to my local ASDA a few weeks ago, was there a queue of over 40 people waiting in line for the BDC? Not everyone feels comfortable in using cards abroad, cant you accept that?

Are you saying, in all seriousness, that you worry about putting a card in an ATM and withdrawing cash? These machines have been around for half a century.

I don't get where the worry is. It takes a couple of seconds to research international ATM locations. It's quicker than obtaining currency on the high street.

Because they are stuck in their ways. They are in a bygone era. They are quite entitled to do it, but why (using your own figures) is it sensible to queue for several minutes in the UK and pay out £30-£50 more than you would for slipping your card into a foreign ATM and getting your local currency in an instant?

For me the waste of time and money isn't worth it.

I can accept it. I also support the concept of educating the ignorant.

Same reason as why endowments and PPI were so popular. People who don't understand finance and don't listen to those who do.

You remind me of a bloke use to work with about 20 years ago - was going for a mortgage interview, I told him "don't get an endowment - they're high charge, inflexible, rubbish policies, get a repayment mortgage, or PEP backed mortgage".

He was persuaded by the bank salesman "your mate is in the minority - the majority of our customers have an endowment". He went with the sheep and got an endowment. Guess what he said to me last time I saw him...

You carry on wasting your money at BDCs like the rest of the sheep, instead of using those scary ATMs.

If I took £1000 in cash with on holiday my biggest worry would be losing it.

Have done it ( apart from that fateful year) every year for over 20 years and have never had an issue. Have always chosen a place with safes and have always been careful not to splash the cash when out and about.

My and OH set a Kitty up each day, we put 100e in each and use a separate wallet to carry it in, the rest goes in safe. I buy top whack insurance to cover us and don't leave stuff hanging around the room, like phone leads etc ,

The only time now, really that I use my cards is for the hire car and if I buy something expensive in a shop whilst away.
