I have a Sony Vaio E17 laptop model number SVE171C11M. It is using windows 8.
It won't start up. It is just displaying a blank black screen. I've tried the Assist button but that doesn't do anything. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated. It is 1 yr old. This happened after I closed the lid on it today whilst it was on which should put it in standby. I also had problems yesterday updating to windows 8.1 so I used the assist function to restore from previous version to go back to windows 8. Then a day after I did this, this has happened but I don't think the two are connected.
Many thanks.

You say it 'won't start up': but is is just that it won't display? Can you still hear it boot up OK?
Plug in an external monitor and test the output to that before you do anythnig else.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I've hooked it up to a different monitor and it won't display. I can hear it does boot up but just doesn't display. Is this a graphic chip problem, is it costly. This was purchased in May 2013 and only started using it since July 2013 so barely a year's use out of it. I this normal.
  • Try taking the power cable and the battery out for at least a minute then but them back in and try booting again, does this make any difference?

When are you pressing the Assist button?

Make sure that the machine is completely off, not on Standby.
Often people configure thei laptop's Power button to send the laptop to sleep, rather than switching off completely, causing themselves extra problems in these cases.
Once completely off, switch it on using the Assist button.

Usually if it's a Graphics card problem, there would be some indication beforehand.
Also, since you have two graphics options, there should be an option of switching from one option to another via the BIOS settings. It might be that the card has come loose. Either way you need to get to the BIOS settings, if only to reset the BIOS to Default/Optimal settings.

Some Sony laptops are supplied with a two year warranty. Have you checked with them?

Could u do tell me a step by step to get into the bios? & what settings to alter? I've done all the other things & also I used assist wen it was off. I'll ring Sony tmoz to enquire if it's a 2 yr warranty but bios help would b great. Thnx

What happens when you press Assist when off? What happens when you press the Power button?

Seems that you aren't the only one

Of course I don't have a machine on which I can attempt to replicate the problem.

    Thnx.
Firstly the monitor. The 1st time I plugged the laptop into an external monitor the colour test on the monitor went off. The second time I plugged the laptop into the external monitor I pressed Fn+F7 as someone recommended and that time the colour test never went off the external monitor. What does this tell us?
    Secondly your link.
I did do the the assist/rescue recovery part yesterday that you linked. I did it yesterday after the update to windows 8.1 failed and I needed to get it back to windows 8. However the next day is when I had these problems of it being a black screen. Now when I press the assist and power button whilst off it powers up but nothing comes on the screen.
    Any ideas?
Thanks for trying to help. Much appreciated as 2 days is a long time to be without a laptop !
  • Do you have any bootable OS discs?
