Removing pay as you go meter.

Me and my other half have recently rented a flat that has a prepaid meter installed that is with NPower. I have read that NPower will charge to replace the meter with a standard one. We haven't moved in yet and have no desire of wanting to keep the pre-paid meter.

I've been looking into changing to another supplier that will allow us to change the meter free of charge. What steps would I need to take to do this? Do I initially need to alert NPower that I have moved into the property, or can I simply call another supplier and ask them to supply us? Do I also need permission from the landlord?

  • It has nothing to do with the LL.

    Contact npower and inform them you've taken over the property. This is very important; the meter may be recovering a previous occupant's debt at the moment and the only way to stop this is by registering as the new tenant.

    BG, edf and eon all exchange PPM's for a credit meter free of charge, provided you pass a credit check. You can commence the switch to them as soon as you've registered with npower. It takes roughly 6 weeks. Once this is up and you are a customer of the new company, ask them to exchange the meter.

    In relation to the credit check, I'm studying my masters this year, but my girlfriend is starting a graduate job so would we have any issues with the credit check? Neither of us have had any debt/credit history, apart from student finance.

    You should be fine, they're only really concerned if you have a CCJ or some other public record of poor credit history.

    fyi edf will exchange your meter for free without a credit check, so if you want to change meter you can
