Motorbike insurance Excess. Thief Caught

I was given the good news that would be thief of my bike (bike was written off due to frame damage and the wiring loom had been badly cut in silly places) had been identified and the case had been passed to the CID for his arrest.

Now, currently I'm at fault as when it happened, we had no idea who'd done it and I'd assumed we'd never catch the guilty party.

Now we have a name, can the excess be passed on and I get the full value? I have no legal cover on the policy, so don't know who to contact or what to do next - when my car was driven in to, I had free legal cover and the premium was paid back after we'd established fault, but that's not necessarily going to happen on its own this time I suspect!

To get your excess back you need to pursue the thief

If he can pay but refuses you can use the county court small claims system.

    Read up MCOL.

But be sure he can pay before spending anything on court action.

Your insurer needs to be reimbursed by the thief in full their outlay before it becomes a non fault claim

*sigh* I should have guessed that would have been the answer.

I think the legal system should make allowances for all vehicles to come with several thousand volt anti-theft devices. Preferably ones with spikes on them to make sure they drive through any sort of protection. I seriously doubt based on the fact he did 10 vehicles in a day that it's a side line interest of a eccentric millionaire.

You need to move to Sith Africa :D
  • Do you have legal cover with your insurance? They should pursue him for you.

Also, there may be compensation for the victims of crimes.
