Temporary vehicle cover question

Has anyone ever applied for this?

We need to test drive a vehicle which is currently uninsured. It's a car being passed to us through the family but it's an automatic and neither my wife nor myself have ever driven one before - we want to be sure we're happy with driving it before committing to take it.

Does anyone know who offers this kind of insurance and how much it might cost just to insure for a test drive?

  • just search for the likes of dayinsure.com and other similar short term providers.

You could add it to your own policy as a temporary vehicle but the admin fees and additional premium would most likely cost more than the usual £25 or so the day insurers charge

Just to add to the above, beware if you've got cover to drive any car on your own premium (often just 3rd party). It will almost certainly only be valid if that car is already insured itself.

I've just run it through the dayinsure system and got a quote of just over £15 for one day.

This strikes me as very reasonable but I find it odd that no questions were asked about driving history or even ownership of the car. Is that par for the course, then?

Have the SORN'd teh vehicle? If its not insured they should SORN it and return the tax disc.

If they failed to do this then there maybe fines on the way.

Reasonable? It equates to £5,475 a year premium and on the assumption you arent test driving a Bugatti Veyron and dont live in a war zone then it'd probably be fairly comfortable to guessing it will cover 99% of the market more than adequately given the UK average premium is around £500

Obv in practice its never going to be 1/365th of an annual premium and really £15 is a reasonable floor for 1 days premium but just to give context.
