Communicating with mobile phone companies

Have just spent nearly 2 hours topping up mobiles with Vodaphone and O2.
Vodaphone website stops working after entering phone number, credit card details and post code (other parts of the site have the same problem) and the automated mobile method restarts after I've keyed all the details in. Eventually I used a landline and spoke to a real person.
With O2 I tried to check my balance. Their signal is weak and I couldn't make or receive any calls/texts so I used the website. Apparently my email/password were wrong so the system says it will send a text with a code - but the signal is weak and I can't receive texts. So I open a LiveChat conversation but the operator won't tell me anything unless I answer the security question "What is my current balance?" The operator tells me I can find out by calling *#10# but the signal is weak and I can't send anything. Eventually I used a landline and managed to find out my balance and top up - but the person there couldn't tell me my account details.
Both these companies are under the misapprehension that mobile phones are a reliable means of communication and that automated systems work.

That said, if all you had to do was travel a short way UK get better signal strength - isn't the security of your personal data worth this?0
