Pre-authorisation... debit card used now cancelled.

Two weeks ago my debit card was pre-authorised by a hotel for a booking I made online. Since then I have had to cancel this card as I believe it had been used fraudulently. Now that I have a new debit card (with a different 16 digit number) will the hotel be able to release the pre-authorisation? I have spoken to my bank (Barclays) and they didn’t know the answer.

    Should be ok as the card number is linked to your sort code and account number and VISA/Mastercard will keep this information on their database for quite some time. I recently had a payment back to a card that was replaced some 18 months ago.

    Generally pre-authorisations arent "released" but it simply drops off after 7-10 days. Barclays will be the ones that control how long they ringfence the monies.

    Have the hotel actually earmarked a sum of money, or have they just taken the card number so that they can charge you in the future if (for example) you don't turn up or you trash the room? If it's the former then what II says is correct, if it's the latter then I think if they tried to use the old card number it'll fail.
