I'm all for reducing energy consumption, let's face it, the oil and gas will run out sooner or later.

I do resent the fact that the EU sees fit to dictate what lightbulbs we are "allowed" to use, and now, how powerful our kettles/hairdryers/vacuum cleaners etc, are going to be. Europe could easily reduce power consumption by redesigning street lighting (point it down towards the pavement, cap over the bulb etc etc), and by turning off redundant lighting in buildings overnight.

We don't tend to have air-con in our houses, nor do we have waste-disposal units. It's not just Europeans who waste power!

Don't get me started on the EU! I had a pet who had epilepsy. At first I could have human anticonvulsants for her at £16 for 1000 tablets (didn't last all that long as being a large animal she needed rather alot every day!) but within 6 months the EU had forced CASCADE on our vets who were then unable to prescribe human drugs if there is a licenced animal equivalent. Unfortunately for me there was one licence-holder in the UK. I ended up paying more than £140 for the identical 1000 tablets. Over time, like most addicts, my pet needed a rather higher dose so 1000 tablets only lasted 2 weeks. These were tablets which have been licenced for well over 100 years, aren't used that much for humans anymore and cost pennies to make. Thanks EU, you cost me over £40K, straight out of my pocket. But my pet was lucky, at least she got the chance of life, most vets won't prescribe on the grounds of the cost burden.

The new legislation is aimed at companies ensuring their products are more efficient - this shouldn't have much effect on the performance.

There is plenty of pressure on other countries to reform - unfortunately it is only Europeans that the EU can create regulations for.
