earlier in the year, recipients of the vista package complained that thier new computer would not recognise thier existing printers etc. Also, there were also reports of problems using other software packages that had worked fine when using the older operating systems.

It depends what hardware/software you intend to run it with. As long as it all appears to run with Vista, I'd go with it.

On this forum in January, someone, after buying a dell, could not get it to recognise their printer and then continued to list a number of external devices with the same problem.
At the time the allegation was that the vista programme refused to recognise much of his existing hardware.
These existing items may have been a few years old but I believe the solution at the time, was to purchase up-to-date items.
    Is this arguement valid?

Yes, but I believe the sutuation is getting better. Personally I havent had any problems with Vistas compatibility. Its also worth considering that in a few years, when you go to buy a new printer, the situation might have reversed and there might be little support for the then dated XP, while Vista support is common.

Id say nothing too old is probably more important.

Windows Vista RTM Software Compatibility List

Windows Vista RTM Hardware Compatibility List

Of course, if theres anything not on that list, theres still a chance that it'll work as they might not have tested it. My Brother printer isnt there, yet works fine. (DCP-315CN)
