Dunkerque is indeed brutalist architecture, but around the port they try to make the best of a bad job. Top tip - only a few minutes away by train is Bergues, a small fortified polder town. Much prettier, and a couple of accommodation tips: the Logis de France 'Au Tonnelier' and 'Vast Brug', a high-class B&B.

Should be nicer than Dunkerque. Restaurant at the Logis is decent, too. If you're staying for more than one day (Bergues is a fairly small place), consider a trip out by train to Cassel.0 -
