Nationwide, Proud to be different (yeah right)

I have a dilemma and I am not sure what to do. Nationwide are trying to get £514.88 out of me for unarranged overdraft fees. It started with a £30 charge for a unpaid direct debit which made me overdrawn. The charge has just snowballed into the amount it is now and I don't know if I have to pay up or can I challenge it as the charges are illegal. Any advice greatly received.

I feel I must make this clear - They haven't actually taken any money off me, but they are claiming I owe them the amount above or they will take legal action to recover it. How do I stop this happening.
