Decorating

Hi guys,

I recently purchased my first home and we have a budget....originally the budget including professional decorating however now we have realised that the boiler is condemned and the place some other bits and bobs. Decorating is the least on our priority list so have decided to do this ourselves.

The walls have been skimmed approx. 5 years ago and are in good condition (couple of tiny cracks that can easily be filled) however after removing the wall paper there is peeling paint underneath and we are unsure on how to decorate. We would like to paint without lining paper as I hate seeing the lines....am I correct in thinking this would be the best way
* Clean the walls to remove any grease and dirt
* Sand the walls (after patch plastering) so that there is no peeling paint ect
* Clean the walls again to remove dust
* prime and then paint?

Any recommendations would be helpful as we really cannot afford a decorator anymore as its going to cost £2k plus and central heating has to come first.

Many thanks
Kirsty

    Those little cracks simply should not be an issue,

    Yes, scrub the walls with sugar soap or such then fill all gaps with filler.

    Any paTCHED UP AREAS MAY NEED MUCH FILLING/SANDING/FILLING ETC, but it will be worth it.

    Any patches, paint, wait, sand, paint, wait, sand etc until there is no seam
    I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

    Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

    Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

    Where the paint has peeled, mix up some polyfilla or similar, and skim a thin layer over the top to make it reasonably level. Then sand until its smooth.
